How to Do Keyword Research for Small Businesses: A Practical Guide
Find the searches your customers actually type, start with your city, and build pages that answer them — without wasting money on ads.
Keyword research simply means finding the words customers type into Google when they need what you sell — and making sure your website has a page that answers each of those searches.
Start with your customers, not tools
Write down the questions customers ask on the phone and in the shop. "Website price", "school software near me", "app developer in Sri Ganganagar" — these are your first keywords.
Add your location
Small businesses win fastest on local searches. Combine each service with your city and nearby towns: "website development Sri Ganganagar", "billing software Hanumangarh".
Check what Google suggests
- Type your keyword into Google and note the autocomplete suggestions.
- Scroll to "People also ask" and "Related searches".
- Use Google Search Console to see which searches already show your site.
Group keywords into pages
One page per service and location works better than one page trying to rank for everything. Each page needs a clear title, a helpful description, real photos and a way to contact you.
Measure and repeat
Check Search Console every month. Pages that get impressions but few clicks need better titles; pages with no impressions need more useful content or internal links.
