Demystifying Core Web Vitals: How to Get Fast Mobile Scores

Core Web Vitals are Google's measurements of how fast and stable a page feels to real visitors. They affect rankings and, more importantly, whether visitors stay.

The three metrics

  • LCP (Largest Contentful Paint): how quickly the main content appears. Aim for under 2.5 seconds.
  • INP (Interaction to Next Paint): how quickly the page responds to taps and clicks. Aim for under 200 ms.
  • CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift): how much the layout jumps while loading. Aim for under 0.1.

Fixes with the biggest impact

Images

Serve images at the size they are displayed, in WebP or AVIF, and add width/height attributes so the browser reserves space. Lazy-load everything below the fold.

JavaScript

Remove unused libraries and third-party widgets. Every script competes with the visitor's taps.

CSS and fonts

Utility-first CSS like Tailwind keeps stylesheets small. Preload key fonts and use font-display: swap.

Measure on real devices

Use PageSpeed Insights and the Core Web Vitals report in Search Console — they include data from real Chrome users, which matters more than a single lab test.
